Steve Prefontaine one of Cross Country / Track & Fields greatest Athletes

Steve Prefontaine (Pre)was one of Cross Country / Track & Fields greatest athletes.  He was born on January 25, 1951 and died tragically on May 30, 1975 in a one car accident.  Pre ran during the "running boom" in the 1970's.  His long hair and his mustache made him easily recognizable as he ran his middle to long distance runs.  Pre's personality was considered "rambunctious" which can be noted by his several quotes:

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest.  I run to see who has the most guts."

"Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it."

"The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a good day to die."

"I'm going to work so that its a pure guts race at the end, and if it is, I am the only one who can win it."

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

Pre changed the athletic world of running.  He is greatly missed by many.
